Omega zip disks

I posted on my main blog that I believe the kindle will go the way of the Palm handheld devices that existed before they morphed into mobile phones.

The Palm m100 was a gadget purchase that I regret.

The other dead technological item I readily recall is the zip disk.

Yesterday I discovered several of them in a box in my cupboard.

Holiday

I start my first holiday since April on Saturday. It will probably also be my last significant break until the same time next year.

With four children we really have to plan our leave around school holidays and January suits me best.

It's generally quiet in the office.

One problem I've had to consider this year is maintenance of the newspaper website.

I've trained a junior journalist to upload stories, but nobody else has the system knowledge or experience to run certain features (like the poll and upload photos) or moderate comments.

I just have to disable these. Hopefully by this time next year someone will show enough interest to want training in those aspects.

As for the holiday ... can't wait!

Readability test
These are the readability test results for this website from Juicy Studio.

The Gunning Fox Index score of 8.71 places this site in the same bracket as most popular novels.

The Flesch Reading Ease score of 65.11 is within the aspirational realm for authors of 60-70.

The Flesch-Kincaid Grade of 5.54 means that 11-year-olds can comfortably read the content.

The navigation links have probably distorted the results a little, but I'm happy with the grades. They suggest this site is easily readable, but not juvenile!

This is a screenshot of the Mount Gambier social network site I have setup at http://mountgambier.ning.com/.

It's a little pretentious of me maybe, but I felt it was a logical extension of The Border Watch website.

Name trivia

If you want to learn some trivia about your name visit http://www.isthisyour.name.

For my name I discovered: 42% of the letters are vowels. Of one million first and last names we looked at, 22.8% have a higher vowel make-up. This means you are well envowelled.

According to the US Census Bureau, 2.641% of US residents have the first name 'Michael' and 0.0003% have the surname 'Gorey'. The US has around 300 million residents, so we guesstimate there are 24 Americans who go by the name 'Michael Gorey'.

Honor roll of editors

The Border Watch is the first newspaper I've worked at that has an "honour roll" of editors.

It is an honor to be an editor and it's nice to see the fact recorded.

The world-record tenure of John Watson (1863-1925) is safe from me.
